Public vs PrivateTopic 509: The following appeared in an editorial from a newspaper serving the town of Saluda. "The Saluda Consolidated High School offers over 200 different courses from which its students can choose. A much smaller private school down the street offers a basic curriculum of only 80 different courses, but it consistently sends a higher proportion of its graduating seniors on to college than Consolidated does. By eliminating at least half of the courses offered there and focusing on a basic curriculum, we could improve student performance at Consolidated and also save many tax dollars." Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc. | Score & Analysis The editorial argues that Saluda Consolidated High School should reduce the number of courses offered in order to improve student performance and that this move will help save tax dollars. He not only presents insufficient evidence but also draws wrong inferences from this evidence and hence this evidence does not lend any credibility to his argument. First, he assumes that the smaller private school's success in sending much larger proportion of its students to college stems from its smaller curriculum. This assumption is unwarranted. The reasons for this smaller schools success could be that their student quality is higher or there are better teachers in this school or the overall education methodology employed by this school is superior to that of the Consolidated High School. Hence one can not conclude that smaller number courses is the only reason for private schools success. Second the argument only talks about percentage of graduating students that go to college. It does not talk about the percentage of students that are graduating from each school. It is possible that the proportion of students graduating from Consolidated High School is more than that of private school. The first priority of any school is to make sure that most of its students graduate. Going to college after graduation is upto the students. Most of the students in private school may be richer than those in Consolidated High School and hence they can better afford the college studies and that could be the reason behind most of the students of private school going to college. Hence smaller number of courses can not be the reason behind smaller proportion of the Consolidated High School's graduates going to college. Third, the argument does not explain how reducing number of courses saves tax dollars or how saving tax dollars is more important than offering wide variety of courses. In conclusion the argument is neither sound nor convincing. It is based on wrong assumptions and insufficient information. To solidify the argument, it should have discussed all possible factors behind students going to college and the proportion of students graduating to the total number of students in their respective schools. - written by quinnn | Computer score: 4 What to do: |
