TOEFL GRE GMAT Sample Essays - Essay # 804 - The following appeared in an environmental newsletter published in Tria Island. "The marine sanctuary on Tria Island was established to protect certain marine mammals. Its regulations ban dumping and offshore oil drilling within 20 miles of Tria, but fishing is not banned. Currently many fish populations in Tria's waters are declining, a situation blamed on pollution. In contrast, the marine sanctuary on Omni Island has regulations that ban dumping, offshore oil drilling, and fishing within 10 miles of Omni and Omni reports no significant decline in its fish populations. Clearly, the decline in fish populations in Tria's waters is the result of overfishing, not pollution. Therefore, the best way to restore Tria's fish populations and to protect all of Tria's marine wildlife is to abandon our regulations and adopt those of Omni. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

The argument is well-presented at first glance. The arguer suggests Tria Island to take the same regulations as those of Omni. In order to support his/her point of view, he/she compares the regulations between Tria and Omni, which shows that Omni ban fishing more than Tria. Furthermore, the arguer states the fact that fish population in Tria has declined while that in Omni does not decline. However, there are some fallacies that make the argument not so strong.

In the first place, the arguer fails to convince us that pollution would not reduce the fish in Tria. It is highly possible that recently a large factory is opened near the sea. The pollution from this factory is the main reason for the reducing of fish. It is equally possible that an oil ship sink near the Tria Island and oil from the ship kill the fish.

In the second place, the arguer fails ignore other differences, which would be alternative reasons for declining of fish, between the two places. The comparison between the two places is not complete. The kind of fish, the fishing population, the weather, all these above would be different in the two places. For example, the weather in Tria Island changed a lot and fish can not afford the change, and the fish died. Omni's weather did not change so that fish there still in good condition.

In the third place, the success of banning fishing in Omni lends no strong support to the fact that banning fishing in Tria would take effect. The ban work depends on the fishing population. Omni, where the population of fishing is high, would benefit a lot from the banning of fishing. Tria's fishing population is low. Few people go fishing so that the ban would not work as well as it is in Omni.

To sum up, the argument is not well reasoning. Fully comparison between the two islands would be made to make sure the real reason of the difference.
