TOEFL GRE GMAT Sample Essays - Essay # 509 - The following appeared in an editorial from a newspaper serving the town of Saluda. "The Saluda Consolidated High School offers over 200 different courses from which its students can choose. A much smaller private school down the street offers a basic curriculum of only 80 different courses, but it consistently sends a higher proportion of its graduating seniors on to college than Consolidated does. By eliminating at least half of the courses offered there and focusing on a basic curriculum, we could improve student performance at Consolidated and also save many tax dollars." Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc.

Topic 509: The following appeared in an editorial from a newspaper serving the town of Saluda. "The Saluda Consolidated High School offers over 200 different courses from which its students can choose. A much smaller private school down the street offers a basic curriculum of only 80 different courses, but it consistently sends a higher proportion of its graduating seniors on to college than Consolidated does. Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc. | Score & Analysis

The resoning of the Saluda Consolidated school does not sound very impressive. It lacks some very important issues that can help any school improve the performance of its students.

Firstly, the Consolidated School's statement is based on the assumption that the lesser the number of courses offered in a cirriculum by a school, the better is the performance of its students. It is quite irrelevant to compare the performance of the students of two different schools that vary considerably in size. Consolidated Schools needs incorporate other measures of ensuring better performance of its students. For instance, teacher-student ratio is quiet significant a factor that affects the performance of students in schools. Thus, by increasing the size of the faculty, the school can perhaps get better results from the students. Because, decrease in the number of courses offered does not imply that all students will get adequate attention of the teacher.

Secondly, if the Consolidated school feels that they have enough staff of teachers then probably it needs to bring about some changes in its teaching methodolgy. For example, including student discussions as a part of the teaching programme or more project works rather than just involving theoretical teaching.

Moreover, if the school thinks that it can reduce its taxes by limiting the number of courses to the basic only, then it is neglecting the fact that offering more courses perhaps attracts more students seeking admission into the school. And increased number of students means more revenue in terms of fees and thus the burden of taxes can be easily met.

Therefore in the light of above reasons, it would be advisable that the school think of some more effective and sound stratergy instead of bringing down the number of courses offered to the basic cirriculum.
