The question whether or not the past is important for understanding the present is a controversial one. Some people argue that looking in the past can provide a moral compass determining the course of action for dealing with current problems. Others consider the past as outdated so that it cannot help in the strive for answers for the current problems. However, in the final analisis, I am going to argue that the past if of special importance for helping humans and states to cope with current problems.
