Topic 450: The following appeared as part of an article in a weekly newsmagazine. "The country of Sacchar can best solve its current trade deficit problem by lowering the price of sugar, its primary export. Such an action would make Sacchar better able to compete for markets with other sugar-exporting countries. The sale of Sacchar's sugar abroad would increase, and this increase would substantially reduce Sacchar's trade deficit." Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc. | Score & Analysis

The conclusion endorsed in this argument is that the country of Sacchar can best solve its current trade deficit problem by lowering the price of sugar. The chain of reasoning in the above argument can be reconstructed as follows: The author of the above statement claim that such an action would make Sacchar better able to compete for markets with other sugar-exporting countries. In addition, the author reasons that the sale of Sacchar's sugar abroad would increase, and this increase would substantially reduce Sacchar's trade deficit. This argument appears to be somewhat convincing at the first glance, but further reflection reveals that the conclusion is based on some dubious assumptions and the reasoning is biased due to the inadequacy and partially in the nature of evidence provided to justify the conclusion. A careful examination would review how groundless the conclusion is.
