Topic 522: The following appeared as part of an editorial in the Waymarsh City newspaper. "Last year the parents of first graders in our school district expressed satisfaction with the reading skills their children developed but complained strongly about their children's math skills. To remedy this serious problem and improve our district's elementary education, everyone in the teacher-training program at Waymarsh University should be required to take more courses in mathematics." Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc. | Score & Analysis

In this argument, the writer asserts that everyone in the teacher-training program at Waymarsh University should be required to take more courses in mathematics. To substantiate his position, he cites statistic to demonstrate that parents of first graders are not satisfy with the current program. This argument appears to be somewhat convincing, but it is in fact unwarranted since it rests on questionable premise that what the first graders perform can represent the whole students. Besides, he overlooks certain compelling factors which might also cause this situation. In short, the analysis does not provide strong support to the conclusion, and lack of credibility makes this argument problematic.
