Topic 534: The following appeared in a memorandum written by the managing director of the Exeunt Theater Company.
"Now that we have moved to a larger theater, we can expect to increase our revenues from ticket sales. To further increase
profits, we should start producing the plays that have been most successful when they were performed in our nation's largest cities.
In addition, we should hire the Adlib Theater Company's director of fund-raising, since corporate contributions to Adlib have
increased significantly over the three years that she has worked for Adlib."
Discuss how well reasoned . . . Etc.

The argument put up by the managing director of the Exeunt Theatre Company is a contentious one. Though it appears convincing at
a macro level, if the intricasies are taken into consideration it leads to a moot point. This claim is dominated by the presence
of unrealistic assumptions and artifacts. These assumptions when tactfully handled can lead to the claim made by the managing
director. Read more... - Theater... by jovana

Though at first glance it might seem that managing director has the right ideas in sugessting re-production of successful plays to increase profits and also in hiring a successful professional from another theater company to raise funds, a closer look reveals numerous examples of poor reasoning. In order to make an effective claim the managing director must show a correlation between events she cites in reference to location and patrons of Exeunt Theater Company. Firstly the managing director of the Exeunt theatre company is foolhardy and preposterous in his views and ideas. Without providing proper evidence and proof for why there was a decline in revenues,he assumes by making a preposterous statement that the sales will improve just because they have moved into the bigger theatre.he fails to provide details that why in smaller theatre the revenue was less.He prematurely assumes that the size of the theatre is the only factor for the decline in revenue. There may be lot of other factors which he had failed to provide, like the decrease in revenue may be due to poor performance from the artists,or they have selected shows which are hated by the audience, lack of flavor in the script, lack of advertisement of the shows and many more.Without citing all these reasons the manager assumes his revenue will increase because of there move to bigger theatre, which for me shows the lack of interest and immaturity on the part of the manager.

The managing director of the exeunt theater comapny would do well to do a double take with regard to his reasonings.A larger theater, even though having more seats, would have considerable increased costs which could eat into the profits of the company. Read more...
