Topic 804: The following appeared in an environmental newsletter published in Tria Island. "The marine sanctuary on Tria Island was established to protect certain marine mammals. Its regulations ban dumping and offshore oil drilling within 20 miles of Tria, but fishing is not banned. Currently many fish populations in Tria's waters are declining, a situation blamed on pollution. In contrast, the marine sanctuary on Omni Island has regulations that ban dumping, offshore oil drilling, and fishing within 10 miles of Omni and Omni reports no significant decline in its fish populations. Clearly, the decline in fish populations in Tria's waters is the result of overfishing, not pollution. Therefore, the best way to restore Tria's fish populations and to protect all of Tria's marine wildlife is to abandon our regulations and adopt those of Omni. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

There are roughly three categories of logic that were overlooked in the author’s argument that Tria island should abandon their regulations and adopt those of Omni island: endogenous factors, exogenous factors, and terminology clarifications Read more... - Marine Sanctuary... by cmq816
The environmental newsletter claims that to abandon Tria\'s regulations and adopt those of Omni is the best way to restore Tria\'s fish populations and to protect all Tria\'s marine wildlife by the contrast between Tria and Omni Island. However, the recommendation is hasty and may cover other possible method to protect marine wildlife in Tria\'s marine sanctuary. Read more... - ... by Tomato
The argument is well-presented at first glance. The arguer suggests Tria Island to take the same regulations as those of Omni. In order to support his/her point of view, he/she compares the regulations between Tria and Omni, which shows that Omni ban fishing more than Tria. Furthermore, the arguer states the fact that fish population in Tria has declined while that in Omni does not decline. However, there are some fallacies that make the argument not so strong.

In this argument, the arguer confidently pronounces that the best way to restore Tria\'s fish populations and to protect all of Tria\'s marine wildlife is to abandon the former regulations and adopt those of Omni(O) . To substantiate this recommendation, the arguer points out the differences of mareine sancuary between Tria(T) and O and fish populations in O hasn\'t declined as quickly as T\'s. Although it seems to be somewhat sensible at first glance, this argument can hardly endure careful consideration in that several flaws undermine its credibility. Read more... - Nice... by sandeepbv7
At first, protection of marine mammals should be the main priority. As the statement itself states tria’s sanctuary has been built to protect the marine mammals. The regulations are passed only for the ban of offshore oil drilling and dumping. In the Omni sanctuary they have passed strict regulations for all the hazardness that give rise to declination of the marine mammals. Read more... - try... by anonymous
This argument recommends to abadon current regulations of Tria Island and adopt those of Omni. To justify this, it cites the fact that fish population around Tria is declining while it is not around Omni, resulting from that fishing is banned in Omni but not in Tria. The recommendation seems well-reasoned, however, it is unpersuative because the argument suffers several critical flaws.
