Topic 850: The following is a letter that recently appeared in the Oak City Gazette, a local newspaper. "Membership in Oak City's Civic Club ?a club whose primary objective is to discuss local issues ?should continue to be restricted to people who live in Oak City. People who work in Oak City but who live elsewhere cannot truly understand the business and politics of the city. It is important to restrict membership to city residents because only residents pay city taxes and therefore only residents understand how the money could best be used to improve the city. At any rate, restricting membership in this way is unlikely to disappoint many of the nonresidents employed in Oak City, since neighboring Elm City's Civic Club has always had an open membership policy, and only twenty-five nonresidents have joined Elm City's Club in the last ten years. " Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument.

The given argument is taken from the letter of a local newspaper Oak City Gazette. This issue is not cogent because it assumes that Oak City Club should restrict its number of people to those who live in this city. It implies that only citizens of Oak city will be the representatives of that association. However, little evidence is given to prove that. But there are several reasons why one can’t presume that, as a result of the lack of information. Read more...
  • Oak City's Civic Club... by johncooper
In this letter, the arguer draws the conclusion that membership in Oak City\'s Civic Club should continue to be restrained to people who live in Oak City for this club whose primary purpose is to discuss local issues. To bolster this assertion, the arguer gives some reasons: (1) as for people who work in Oak City but who live elsewhere, hardly can they truly understand the business and politics of the city; (2) only these taxpayer residents know how to use the money effectively;(3)the author also cites the fact that in the last ten years very low rate of nonresidents have joined the nearby Elm City\'s Civic Club, which has always had an open membership policy. Close scrutiny of each of these reasons, however, reveals that this argument suffers from several logical flaws. Read more...

In this argument, the arguer confidently pronounces that membership in Oak City\'s Civic club (OCCC) should continue to be restricted to people who live in Oak City(OC). To substantiate this recommendation, the arguer cites that people who don\'t live in OC cannot truly understand the business and politics of the city and residents in OC know how to spend money they paid as city taxes. Furthermore, the arguer points out that nearby Elm City’s Civic Club (ECCC) have always opened to people not live in their city but only 25 nonresidents have joined ECCC in the last ten years. Although it seems to be somewhat sensible at first glance, this argument can hardly endure careful consideration in that several flaws undermine its credibility. Read more...

The author concludes that the club in Oak City\'s Civic Club (OCCC) should carry out the restriction to the nonresidents since they do not pay the taxes and they do not understand the business and politics in Oak City (OC). To justify this conclusion, the author stated that the Elm City\'s Civic Club (ECCC) do not set the restriction concerning to non-residential members, result in no more 25 non-residential people had joined the ECCC during 10 years time. However, there are flaws in the logic which hinder the conclusion of the argument. Read more...
